Preschool Technology Readiness Mission

The purpose of this blog is to explore the use of technology in the preschool classroom, considering different ideas, research, and methods, and to build a community of educators, parents, techies, and anyone interested in technology in preschool, where we can share our ideas and knowledge. We, the authors and contributors, are Early Childhood Education students, currently studying ECE Curriculum. Our textbook, The Creative Curriculum For Preschool (Diane Trister Dodge, Laura J. Colker, and Cate Heroman), is the foundation of our site, specifically with its chapter on computers (chapter 15).

We invite you, our readers, to reflect upon the importance of computers in preschool and consider the questions involved. Also, to share your experiences, knowledge, and resources with us, and those who frequent our blog.

Thank You!

Preschool Technology Readiness

A prospective from an experienced mom regarding computer technology, children need to start learning about computers at a young age with complete guidance. In the Creative Curriculum for Preschool plan computers are part of the program. Based on theory and research the curriculum is taking the child completely, meaning family too and not seeing them only as a student. Giving a safe, supportive, caring and stimulating environment is only part of the plan. Constant assessing and understanding how to implement each component which are how children develop and learn, the family's role, teacher's role, learning environment, and what children learn.  Integrating all areas like computers, blocks, art, etc., of learning are not only beneficial but essential to the plan. This is what makes the program successful. Having children and grandchildren computers have been becoming more and more part of my life.
I have two sons in their thirties. As I think back to their school days, computers were just beginning to be introduced as part of an extracurricular tool. Today one son has embraced technology in computer programming while the other has very little to do with computers. The difference is the one that doesn’t use computers much has had a harder time just functioning efficiently as an adult. As time goes on many things are being done through the computer thus computer literacy is necessary. I also have a severely disabled granddaughter, in her school the use of technical tools especially for communication are used and greatly appreciated. Schools of today have incorporated computers significantly.
As I continue to educate myself, the lesson I am learning is that preschool children are our future and so are computers. With everything computers offer and the creativity in a child, the possibilities are limitless. With the correct guidance while a child is developing and learning individuality will come through with independent, confident, and flourishing children. A Creative Curriculum for Preschool is a great program recognizing children to be diverse and unique. Our future is our children and so are computers.
